The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme that was hosted by Breaking the Spine to spotlight exciting upcoming titles.

I can’t resist a book with a title like that! There’s at least one other cool literary-inspired speculative release coming out in 2017 and this English major can’t wait to try them both out! The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter sounds particularly appealing, since I just picked up The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for my bed time reading…

Goodreads Description

Based on some of literature’s horror and science fiction classics, this is the story of a remarkable group of women who come together to solve the mystery of a series of gruesome murders—and the bigger mystery of their own origins.

Mary Jekyll, alone and penniless following her parents’ death, is curious about the secrets of her father’s mysterious past. One clue in particular hints that Edward Hyde, her father’s former friend and a murderer, may be nearby, and there is a reward for information leading to his capture…a reward that would solve all of her immediate financial woes.

But her hunt leads her to Hyde’s daughter, Diana, a feral child left to be raised by nuns. With the assistance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, Mary continues her search for the elusive Hyde, and soon befriends more women, all of whom have been created through terrifying experimentation: Beatrice Rappaccini, Catherin Moreau, and Justine Frankenstein.

When their investigations lead them to the discovery of a secret society of immoral and power-crazed scientists, the horrors of their past return. Now it is up to the monsters to finally triumph over the monstrous. The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter is adult speculative fiction written by Theodora Goss and expected to be published June 20th 2017 by Saga Press.

Exactly- and absolutely 😀 I can’t resist classic retellings or explorations…they warm my heart, even if they’re horror LOL

I know, I am too! I can’t watch horror movies at all! I haven’t tried much horror fiction, yet, but.even the original Jekyll/Hyde is creeping me out Lol. Still, can’t resist at least trying something like this. It’s too enticing 😍

  6. With that delightful name dropping 😀 how could I resist this book? And the idea of an all-female investigative team is quite appealing: it somehow reminds me of the series “The Bletchley Circle” where former cryptographers apply their skills to solve murders.

I’d never heard of The Bletchley Circle before, but you’re right they both have the group of women detectives! It sounds like you might be somewhat of a mystery fan, too? I particularly love mysteries set in the late 19th-early 20th century 😀

      • For me it started when I read Sarah Pinborough’s wonderful duology – Mayhem and Murder: after that I was totally on board with period mystery (and a touch of steampunk, that’s always good…)

That sounds awesome! I’m always on the look out for new mysteries because I don’t know the genre very well, yet. And these even have supernatural elements, which is a huge plus. Thanks 😀
